Reading

Our aim is for all children to enjoy reading experiences at whatever level they are working at. For some children this will be to experience objects related to texts, stories and poems, others will develop the skills needed to be learners who read confidently and independently.

Through our differentiated provision all children have opportunities to enjoy reading at their own level. For some this will be through sensory stories with objects and experiences which help develop their awareness and understanding. For others it will be through a structured approach following the phases in “Letters and Sounds” to help them develop knowledge of phonics.

At Kingsbury we use a variety of reading schemes which encompass a range of reading strategies including blending and segmenting and sight vocabulary as we recognise that children will have different personal preferences and learning styles. These reading schemes are organised into colour bands so that children have a wide variety of reading material at each level to ensure that they can develop their skills and be confident readers. We also use Bug Club, an online system.

Where appropriate reading books are sent home with some pupils so that parents can hear them read. Progress in reading is recorded in individual reading record. This reading record is standardised throughout the school.
